Autonomous North and East Syria’s Ilham Ahmed strongly condemned Turkey’s ongoing interference in the region during a meeting held on Tuesday in al-Hasakah (Hesekê).
Ahmed, co-chair of the Department of Foreign Relations of the Kurdish-led Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), detailed how Turkey’s actions are severely impacting the region’s stability by targeting infrastructure, civilians and security forces.
The meeting, which was organised by the Department of Foreign Relations in collaboration with the Department of Organisational Affairs, aimed to engage civil society organisations in addressing the challenges faced by the AANES. The meeting gathered various stakeholders who are active in the region to discuss strategies for overcoming local and regional obstacles.
Ahmed expressed serious concerns about Turkey’s role in the conflict, stating, “Turkey’s direct attacks on our infrastructure and the persistent threats to our security personnel and civilians are direct attempts to destabilise North and East Syria.” She emphasised the importance of civil society organisations in building resilience among local communities against such external pressures.
The discussion also touched on the broader implications of Turkey’s actions for regional security and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Syria. Ahmed called for a unified approach to advocate for human rights and maintain stability, urging international actors to recognise and respond to Turkey’s aggressive strategies in the region.
The meeting concluded with a resolution to hold regular gatherings to ensure coordinated efforts among civil society groups, the Autonomous Administration and international supporters to address these pressing issues.
