The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) has announced the formation of a new administrative body for Qamishli (Qamişlo) international airport, marking a significant step in the consolidation of its civil infrastructure. The decision was issued on 19 June in the town of Ain Issa (Ên Îsa) and is effective immediately.
According to the decision, the General Administration of Qamishli International Airport will operate under the administrative and financial authority of the Executive Council of the Autonomous Administration. The decision stated that all operational, legal and financial matters related to the airport will now fall under this new structure.
Qamishli lies in Syria’s northeast near the Turkish border and has long functioned as both a civil and military airfield. Control of the airport has fluctuated during the course of Syria’s conflict, with shared oversight between regional authorities and the central government in Damascus. Flights have remained limited in recent years due to political uncertainty and security conditions.
The AANES emerged from the Syrian conflict as a self-governing political structure in areas largely controlled by Kurdish-led forces. Though not officially recognised by the Syrian government or the international community, the administration is in official talks with both and has developed its own institutions, including in the areas of education, the judiciary, and now also air transport management.
The decision does not clarify how the new administrative body will interact with any existing presence of the Syrian government at the site.
