Kobani University, located in the Euphrates Canton of North and East Syria (Rojava), has held its third graduation ceremony, honouring its new graduates with a festive event, reports Rudaw.
The ceremony drew a large crowd, attracting numerous local citizens as well as faculty members, graduating students and family members. In parallel to graduation customs in some other countries, the graduates marked the occasion by tossing not caps, but ‘cemedani’ traditional Kurdish headscarves, into the air.
The event commenced with the playing of the Kurdish national anthem “Ey Reqib” at the university, before moving to Kobani Stadium, where the celebrations continued with the active participation of families and members of the community.
Newly graduated student Medya Osman Eli, speaking on behalf of the Students’ Assembly, highlighted the significance of academic education in the Kurdish language, emphasising its importance for the community and the region.
Kobani University was established by the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) in 2017 and has been expanding its academic offerings and infrastructure ever since. The university boasts a wide range of subjects, having faculties of literature, education, natural sciences, medicine, technology, mathematics, languages, management and legal sciences, higher education sciences and studies, and social science research.
In a significant development, the construction of a new building and complex for Kobani University, initiated by the AANES in 2018, was officially completed and opened in March. This expansion marks a key milestone in the university’s mission to provide comprehensive education and research facilities to its students.
