In a recent statement, the Kurdistan National Congress (KNK), a Brussels-based umbrella organisation representing Kurdish political parties, NGOs, and intellectuals, has drawn attention to intensified Turkish military operations in Northeast Syria. These actions have reportedly led to the deaths of around 30 civilians in the past few days.
The KNK’s statement highlights several incidents contributing to the rising civilian death toll. On 28 January, Turkish airstrikes targeted the town of Sarrin (Sirîn), south of Kobani (Kobanê), resulting in the deaths of six civilians and injuries to others.
Additionally, previous attacks in areas such as Ain Issa (Eyn Îsa) have led to further civilian casualties, including children.
The KNK emphasises the strategic importance of locations like the Tishreen (Tişrîn) Dam, which have been focal points of Turkish military actions. Damage to such critical infrastructure poses severe risks to the livelihoods of up to a million people downstream, affecting cities like Raqqa and surrounding regions.
In its appeal, the KNK urges the international community to take immediate action to halt these violations and prevent further escalation. They call for pressure on Turkey to adhere to international law, cease its military campaigns, and respect existing ceasefires.
The KNK’s call to action underscores the urgency of addressing the escalating violence in Northeast Syria and the pressing need for international intervention to protect civilian lives and uphold regional stability.
