Hundreds mourned and honoured five Kurdish fighters killed in recent clashes with Turkey and the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) on 1 and 3 December 2024, at a mass funeral held in Kobani (Kobanê) on Saturday. The ceremony began with a moment of silence before speakers paid tribute to the fallen.
Rûken Temo, a Kobani Military Council member, said, “Our fighters are resisting Turkish occupation and the allied groups [of the SNA] with unwavering determination. They are making history by thwarting these invasion plans.”
Kurdish fighters known as Berfin Çem, Ahîn Dilgeş, Fîras Kobanê, Heqi and Dilovan Girik, were killed between 1-3 December in Shahba (Şehba), Tel Rifaat (Til Rifat) and Sheikh Maqsood (Şêxmeqsûd) in clashes against Turkish-backed SNA forces.
Bekir Hec İsa, a member of the Euphrates Canton Assembly of Syria’s Democratic Union Party (PYD), said, “We draw strength from those who fell and we must honour their legacy by defending what they achieved through sacrifice and determination.”
The funeral concluded with slogans and victory signs, and families received certificates of honour commemorating their loved ones.
