The Foreign Ministries of Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, neighbouring Arab countries, have welcomed the historic agreement signed by SDF General Commander Mazloum Abdi and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa (al-Julani) on Monday, 10 March. The agreement sets out seven core provisions, with a focus on the recognition of the Kurds as an indigenous part of Syria, with guaranteed citizenship and constitutional rights, a nationwide ceasefire, and the merging of civil and military institutions in northeastern Syria into the central Damascus government administration.
Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates welcomed the agreement, calling it an “important step towards rebuilding Syria on the foundations that guarantee its unity, sovereignty and stability, preserve its security, rid it of terrorism, and safeguard the rights of all Syrian people”. The Ministry also declared their readiness to support Syria in the upcoming process which it said must “involve the different spectrums of the Syrian people, preserve all their rights, and protect them from chaos, strife and conflict”.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar also declared their support for the agreement, stating that it was an “important step towards consolidating civil peace, enhancing security and stability, and building a state based on institutions and the rule of law”. Qatar reiterated “full support for Syria’s sovereignty and the aspirations of its brotherly people for freedom, development and prosperity”.
Qatar’s foreign ministry also welcomed the integration of the SDF into the Syrian army, saying, “Syria’s stability and prosperity require the state to maintain a monopoly on the use of force through a unified army that represents all Syrian components, ensuring the preservation of the country’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.”
Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, welcoming the agreement, highlighted the importance of preserving civil peace in Syria and “completing the process of building state institutions to achieve security and stability and meet the aspirations of the Syrian people”. In its statement, Saudi Arabia reiterated full support for a unified Syria, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
