Civilian homes in Goharzi village in the Amediya (Amêdî) district of Duhok (Dihok), came under the fire of Turkish forces on 24 September causing substantial damage as part of Turkey’s ongoing artillery assaults and occupation in Iraqi Kurdistan (Bashur), according to published reports.
Kamran Osman, head of the international organisation Community Peacemaker Teams (CPT), commented on the assault, which targeted civilian dwellings and damaged neighbouring houses:
“At approximately 14:30, a missile hit a civilian home in the village of Goharze. Thankfully, apart from material damage, no casualties were reported.”
A regional outlet, Sepi Media, corroborated this account, confirming that the shell’s impact had caused further damage to two adjacent residential homes.
Osman further reported that 11 artillery shells have struck Goharze since the start of the year. He also revealed that, as of 15 June 2024, the Turkish military has established two additional military bases behind the village, where their operations remain ongoing.
According to documented statistics, Turkey’s extensive military incursion into Iraqi Kurdistan has led to the deaths of 53 civilians and the forced evacuation of 110 villages in the Amediya district.
According to CPT statistics, Turkish airstrikes in Iraqi Kurdistan have killed nine civilians this year. The Turkish army has advanced up to 15 kilometres into Iraqi Kurdistan, forcing the evacuation of 162 villages, with over 600 more at risk. Observers warn that Turkey’s continued incursion into Iraqi Kurdistan could cause the Kurdistan Regional Government to lose control of up to 75% of the province of Dohuk, with severe consequences for civilians and widespread displacement of peoples.
