The Pentagon announced on Thursday that the number of US troops in Syria has reached approximately 2,000, significantly higher than the previously stated figure of 900. Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Patrick Ryder clarified that the additional 1,100 troops are “temporary rotational forces” deployed to meet “changing mission requirements”.
These troops have been in Syria since before the fall of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime on 8 December. Ryder emphasised that the core contingent of 900 personnel remains focused on defeating ISIS, while the rotational forces support evolving operational requirements. Much of the US presence is concentrated in areas controlled by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), key partners in the fight against ISIS.
The SDF, which has faced intensified Turkish military operations in recent weeks, continues to coordinate closely with US forces to maintain stability in the region. Ryder did not specify how the troop increase relates to heightened tensions in northern Syria, but noted that the adjustments reflect the “significant situation” on the ground.
The increased presence underscores Washington’s balancing act between combating the resurgence of ISIS and addressing regional complexities, including protecting its Kurdish allies while managing strained relations with Turkey.
