The Conference for Kurdish Unity and Common Vision is set to take place in North and East Syria on 26 April, in which over 300 Kurdish figures of the political spectrum will be brought together to discuss and make practical decisions concerning the desired structure of the Syrian state, and the collective rights of the Kurdish people in Syria. The meeting was announced by Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Commander Mazloum Abdi on X.
In an exclusive interview with North Press Agency, Suleiman Oso, a senior member of the Kurdish National Council (KNC) in Syria, shared more information about the upcoming conference. At the event, several Kurdish parties are expected to present a draft proposal aimed at creating a united political stance. The goal is to clarify their position in response to the changing political situation in Syria and issues around the country’s territorial integrity. The conference will mostly be held behind closed doors, with limited media access.
Oso noted that the number of participants could easily exceed 300, and that these participants will all be people currently residing in North and East Syria. Despite the economic instability, the threat of ISIS and Turkish-backed militias, the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) has continued to build institutions in this region so as to implement a model of self-governance. Despite this, Oso insisted that this initiative was not partisan or separatist in any way, and that the possibility of a unified Kurdish position in Syria would be instrumental in Syrian unity.
Ahead of the conference, the Democratic Union Party (PYD) was able to meet with the Kurdish National Council and agree on a common political vision. SDF Commander Mazloum Abdi was present at this meeting, seen as an important step in preparation of the conference.
