A powerful explosion struck the eastern part of Qamishli (Qamişlo) on Tuesday, with initial reports indicating an attack on a vehicle inside a prison complex in the Umm al-Fursan neighbourhood of the city. The blast, which occurred at around 13:30 local time, prompted the Internal Security Forces to establish a security cordon around the targeted facility.
Correspondents at the scene from the Hawar News Agency (ANHA) initially reported confusion over the details. However, subsequent information from the General Command of the Internal Security Forces of North and East Syria confirmed that the explosion was the result of a drone strike carried out by Turkish forces.
According to the statement, the drone strike targeted a vehicle belonging to the Internal Security Forces stationed at a detention centre holding individuals arrested on criminal and drug-related charges. The attack led to the death of an administrative employee.
The Internal Security Forces condemned the attack, describing it as an attempt to create chaos within the prison and potentially enable the escape of detainees. They also accused Turkish forces of attempting to distract them from their duties and destabilise the region.
The statement placed an emphasis on the vigilance of the Internal Security Forces in maintaining order and security in the area despite the incident. It also called on the local population to voice their opposition to Turkish aggression, reaffirming their commitment to protecting the community.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as they bolster security measures in the affected area.
