In an interview with theworld.org’s Shirin Jafaari, Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) General Commander Mazloum Abdi warned of an imminent Turkish incursion into northern Syria. He highlighted the ongoing security challenges in the region, including the possibility of an ISIS resurgence. Abdi also discussed the unstable situation on the Syrian-Turkish border, the security of ISIS detention facilities, and Kurdish claims in a post-Assad Syria.
Abdi confirmed reports of a Turkish military build-up near the border, saying: “There is mobilisation and plans to attack Kobani. Turkish forces have reportedly attempted to cross the Euphrates River, leading to clashes with SDF units. While the US is mediating to prevent escalation, Abdi noted that there is no permanent ceasefire, with only a temporary one-week extension currently in place.
Abdi expressed concern about the security of the camps and prisons which are holding thousands of ISIS fighters and their families. As Kurdish forces have been diverted to defend their communities, vulnerabilities have emerged, leading to increased ISIS activity. “We have seen ISIS seize weapons and ammunition from the Syrian desert,” he said, citing recent attacks on detention facilities as evidence of the growing threat.
Looking beyond the Assad era, Abdi stressed the need for constitutional recognition of Kurdish rights, describing the Kurds as “the real opposition” to the Assad regime and the key players in the fight against ISIS. He welcomed positive signals from the new Syrian government, but stressed the need for inclusive political dialogue.
Abdi praised US efforts to mediate between the SDF and Turkey and urged continued support to stabilise northeastern Syria. He also expressed optimism about working with the new US administration to strengthen ties and counter radical influences in Syria.
Despite significant challenges, Abdi remains hopeful for a stable and inclusive future for Syria. He called on the US to put pressure on Turkey to keep the peace in Kobani, a symbolic town in the fight against ISIS, underlining its importance in the US-SDF relationship.
