Reactions to the historic call of Abdullah Öcalan, the leader of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), who is currently imprisoned on the Turkish prison island of İmralı, are being reported from a number of international sources. Secretary-General António Guterres, the United Nations press spokesperson, has welcomed the ‘call to lay down arms’.
Guterres’ spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, said the UN viewed the declaration as an “extremely important event” that could pave the way for a solution to the decades-long conflict. “This is a glimmer of hope that would lead to a resolution of a long-standing conflict,” Dujarric told a news briefing.
He added that the UN was closely monitoring the situation and seeking further details on possible next steps. “For us, it really offers a glimmer of hope in a conflict that has gone on for so long and in which so many civilians have suffered and paid the ultimate price.”
Öcalan’s call comes amid renewed international debate over Turkey’s Kurdish issue. While Ankara has yet to respond formally, analysts say that any meaningful peace process would require structural political reforms.
Neither the Turkish Government nor the PKK leadership have issued an official response, but earlier this month the PKK signalled a willingness to align itself with Öcalan’s directives. The UN’s reaction follows similar statements by European officials, who have described the development as a potential turning point.
