Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) President Bafal Talabani has declared his support for the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), which governs parts of northern Syria known as Rojava, and expressed his hopes for a democratic future for the country.
In the statement, posted on X, Talabani reaffirmed his “unwavering support for our brothers and sisters in Rojava” and highlighted the need to “respect and protect the rights of the Kurdish people”. Talabani clarified that lasting peace in the Middle East can only be achieved by finding “a resolution to the Kurdish issue”.

Talabani stated that he has been “closely monitoring the events and developments in Syria and Rojava” and said that the region is going through a “sensitive and challenging time”.
“We deeply respect the will of the Syrian people and the decisions they make regarding their country’s future,” Talabani continued, emphasising that these decisions must be based on “a framework that safeguards the rights of all communities and acknowledges the political realities on the ground”. He declared hope for a new era for Syria and a “stable and prosperous future for all Syrians”.
