A new political initiative launched in Brussels aims to forge a unified democratic solution for Syria, emphasising territorial integrity while addressing long-standing Kurdish rights and constitutional reform.
The ‘Path to a Democratic Syria’ congress convened in Brussels on 25-26 October, bringing together representatives from political parties, women’s organisations and independent figures from Kurdish-led North & East Syria, and Syrian movements from abroad.
“The congress was held during a period of intense global tension. For decades, the Syrian regime has created divisions among Syrians based on national, sectarian and religious differences, preventing their unity,” Ali Rahmoun, member of the Path to a Democratic Syria’s General Secretariat, told ANHA on Saturday.
The congress established key principles including territorial unity for Syria, expanded representation for all Syrians, and the need for a new constitution aligned with international human rights standards. The concluding declaration placed an emphasis on Syrian national identity while protecting component identities.
‘We expect support from international powers and Arab states that prioritise a political solution for Syria,’ Rahmoun explained. ‘Our mission is to reach a common understanding with states active in Syria’s case and democratic forces and personalities within Syria.’
Rahmoun concluded by calling for broad support to establish a ‘decentralised, pluralistic Syrian citizenship’ as a permanent solution to the crisis.
