Apê Nemir (Xelil Osman), a key figure in the Kurdish resistance and a veteran of the battle of Kobani (Kobanê) against Islamic State (ISIS) forces, has died at the age of 75. His passing was announced by the People’s Protection Units (YPG), who described him as an inspirational leader within the Kurdish struggle.
In a statement, the YPG praised Apê Nemir’s significant contributions during the siege of Kobani in 2014, a pivotal moment in the fight against ISIS. “Apê Nemir stood firm during one of the most challenging periods for our people,” the YPG stated, highlighting his role in boosting the morale of Kurdish fighters on the front lines.
The Federation of Veterans of North and East Syria (FGBRS) also paid tribute to him, calling him “a source of inspiration who exemplified the sacrifices made by the Kurdish people.” The FGBRS noted that Apê Nemir had spent decades in the struggle for Kurdish rights and freedom, and his influence extended beyond military engagements to mentoring younger fighters in the movement.
Apê Nemir’s involvement in the Kurdish freedom struggle began long before the siege of Kobani, becoming a symbol of resilience and determination during the conflict. The battle for Kobani, which lasted from September 2014 to January 2015, drew international attention as Kurdish forces, supported by coalition airstrikes, successfully defended the city from ISIS.
In addition to his military contributions, Apê Nemir was respected for his ability to share knowledge and experience with younger members of the Kurdish forces. “He ensured that the principles of the Kurdish struggle were passed down to future generations,” FGBRS stated. Apê Nemir’s commitment to the cause continued until his death, leaving a lasting legacy within the Kurdish community.
Tributes for Apê Nemir have emerged from various groups within the Euphrates Canton of North and East Syria (Rojava) and the broader Kurdish diaspora. His death marks a significant loss for many, as he was not only seen as a veteran but also as a mentor and leader whose life embodied the struggles faced by the Kurdish people.
The YPG concluded their statement by affirming that Apê Nemir’s legacy would live on through the ongoing efforts of those he inspired. “His memory will continue to motivate our struggle for autonomy and freedom,” they stated.
Apê Nemir is survived by fellow comrades and supporters who honour his dedication to the Kurdish cause. His story remains an essential part of the narrative surrounding the Kurdish resistance, particularly during the intense conflicts in the Euphrates Canton of North and East Syria.
