Kamal Chomani, a Kurdish political analyst, argues that Iran must address its Kurdish question through constructive dialogue and democratic engagement, especially under the leadership of its new reformist president, Masoud Pezeshkian. Chomani emphasises that despite Iran’s efforts to weaken the Kurdish nationalist movement, it has failed to address the grievances driving these sentiments. He suggests that now is the time for Iran to consider a peaceful resolution that respects minority rights and strengthens national unity.
Chomani notes that several recent developments provide a basis for optimism. The Kurdish community participated in Nowruz festival celebrations more freely this year and Kurdish candidates won parliamentary seats in Urmia, a city with a mixed population of Kurds and Azeris. Additionally, Iraq’s Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani’s visit to Iran in May was seen as a positive step toward better relations. However, some Kurds remain sceptical, perceiving these moves as part of a “carrot and stick” approach by the Iranian state, which has historically used peace deals as a tactical response when under pressure.
He further highlights that Iran’s support for Kurdish groups abroad contrasts sharply with its internal policies, where basic political rights, such as education in Kurdish, remain out of reach. This disparity, he argues, exacerbates tensions and undermines Iran’s domestic stability. Chomani believes that Iran could benefit from adopting a more democratic approach, similar to Iraq’s post-2005 constitutional settlement, to grant greater autonomy and rights to Kurds without compromising territorial integrity.
Looking ahead, Chomani urges Iran to pursue dialogue with its Kurdish community, suggesting that a peaceful resolution would not only address minority grievances but also enhance Iran’s regional influence and international standing. He argues that President Pezeshkian, with his strong ties to Iranian Kurdistan and fluency in Kurdish, is well-placed to lead such efforts, which could transform Iran into an ally of the Kurds and improve its relations with neighbouring countries.
