French air forces conducted targeted strikes on ISIS positions in Syria on Sunday, Defence Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced on Tuesday. The operations, carried out under the international coalition ‘Operation Inherent Resolve’, reflect France’s ongoing commitment to combating terrorism in the region.
“Our forces remain engaged in the fight against terrorism in the Levant,” Lecornu stated on X (formerly Twitter). He confirmed the strikes were part of France’s long-standing contributions to the coalition, which began in 2014 in Iraq and 2015 in Syria.
The strikes occur as ISIS activity in Syria surges. Insight, a human rights organisation, reports 249 ISIS attacks this year have resulted in 494 deaths and 359 injuries. These figures underscore the escalating threat, which has also drawn recent operations from other coalition allies, including the United States.
France has consistently warned against targeting the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a key ally in the fight against ISIS. Lecornu’s announcement highlights the coalition’s ongoing strategy to neutralise the militant group while maintaining regional stability.
