Gregor Gysi, a leading member of Germany’s Die Linke party, has called on the German government to demand an immediate end to Turkey’s military actions against the Kurdish population in Iraq and Syria. Gysi also called for an immediate halt to arms exports to Turkey, citing violations of international law.
The MP criticised previous governments under Angela Merkel and Olaf Scholz for remaining largely silent on Turkey’s actions. He argued that this silence stemmed from a desire to protect the refugee deal with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. “Germany must finally abandon this almost submissive attitude towards Erdoğan,” Gysi said.
Gysi highlighted the crucial role of the Kurds in the fight against ISIS, stressing that their contributions must not be ignored. He also urged the government to confront Turkey’s repression of Kurds in Germany, which he said was happening under Ankara’s indirect influence.
