Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Mazloum Abdî has issued a statement addressing the unfolding crisis in northwest Syria. Describing the situation as “rapid and unexpected”, he detailed how the SDF intervened to safeguard civilians following a series of attacks and the collapse of the Syrian Army in key areas.
In the statement, Abdî explained that the SDF opened a humanitarian corridor to connect eastern regions with Aleppo and the Tel Rifaat area. This effort aimed to protect civilians and prevent potential massacres. However, Turkish-backed armed groups targeted this corridor, severing the critical lifeline.
Despite these setbacks, the SDF have shown remarkable resilience. Abdî commended their defence of Kurdish neighbourhoods in Aleppo and the Tel Rifaat and Shahba (Şehba) regions, and stated that they are actively engaging with all relevant actors in Syria to ensure the safety of civilians and facilitate their evacuation to secure areas in the region.
The statement highlights the SDF’s commitment to protecting its people amid ongoing Turkish-backed offensives. Abdî also called on the international community to take urgent action to prevent further atrocities and support efforts for stability and peace in the region.
