While the Syrian Constitutional Committee, which was established under the leadership of the United Nations (UN) to solve the Syrian crisis, completes its fifth round of talks, it is still far from solving the conflicts in Syria. At the same time, it continues to ignore the will of the real residents of the region.
The committee, which is supposed to prepare a new and just constitution for Syria, excludes many groups from the debates and there has been no progress so far. The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) is deliberately not included within the committee and this has been criticised by various democratic platforms.
Syrian Democratic Council (MSD) co-presidency committee member Xelil Ebdo spoke to Hawar News about the latest Syrian Constitutional Committee meetings in Geneva and gave his opinions on the ongoing situation in the region.
Regarding the Syrian regime, he said: “The only wish of the Damascus government is to stay in power. Since the regime does not want to share its power, the process has come to a standstill”. He added that “The Syrian regime does not want pluralism and is ignoring the will of the Syrian population”.
Ebdo, who stressed that the AANES’s exclusion from the process is unacceptable, continued: “A constitution which will be prepared by this committee can never serve the people of Syria. Syria made a deal with Russia and Turkey in Astana, and the new constitution will be following that deal. It will not be for the good of the people, but will suit those in power.
“The AANES controls a large part of Syria and has proved its success to the whole world”, he added. “The AANES always demands a just, democratic and decentralised constitution, but those in power do not like that idea”, he said. “Kurdish people are deliberately excluded from the preparation of Syria’s constitution, and this is unacceptable”.
Xelil Ebdo asked the Syrian government to stop being an ally to Turkey and Iran. “The Syrian government has to protect the will of its people and the integrity of Syria. It should stop being an ally to Iran and Turkey”, he said.
