The People’s Democratic Party (HDP) coordinated celebrations across cities in Turkey on 1 November, ‘World Kobanê Day’.
The HDP issued a statement on World Kobanê Day: “The Kobanê revolution is a women’s revolution. This resistance that developed under the leadership of women also destroyed male and masculine domination”. Celebrations took place in many cities in Turkey, including İstanbul, Mersin, Ankara, Adana, Urfa (Riha), Konya, Şırnak (Şirnex), Van (Wan), Diyarbakır (Amed), Iğdır, Siirt (Sêrt) and Elazığ (Xerpêt).
The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) had attacked the northern Syrian city of Kobanê in the fall of 2014 and the ISIS assault had been repelled by Kurdish forces in 2015. This victory is remembered every year on 1 November, ‘World Kobanê Day’.
World Kobanê Day was also celebrated this year as World Rojava Day.
