The Women’s Peace Conference will take place in Berlin on Saturday, bringing together women from a range of conflict-affected regions, including Kurdistan, Palestine and the Philippines. Organised by groups such as the Cenî Kurdish Women’s Peace Office and Women Defend Rojava, the conference will address the impacts of war, crises, and environmental disasters, with a focus on violence against women.
Ruken Dağ from the Cenî Kurdish Women’s Peace Office highlighted the destructive effects of militarisation and patriarchal violence on societies. “The forms of violence against women have emerged as a result of ecological, psychological and military war policies, and this violence must be fought,” Dağ explained. She emphasised the global relevance of the ‘Jin Jiyan Azadî’ (Woman, Life, Freedom) philosophy, which will be a central theme of the conference.
Dağ also drew attention to the increasing global issue of femicide, stating, “We see that patriarchy forms the basis of conflicts between capitalism and the human-nature relationship. Women have historically played a central role in peace processes, and today they are on the front lines of anti-war resistance.”
The conference will bring together women from regions such as Sudan, Tigray and the Congo to discuss solutions and share experiences. Dağ emphasised that women have the power to build a more just and peaceful world, saying, “Women coming together can create a world worth fighting for. The struggle for freedom, humanity and peace will continue.”
