The United Nations Security Council has approved the appointment of Jan Kubis as the UN Libya envoy.
Slovakia’s former foreign minister Jan Kubis will succeed Ghassan Salame – nearly a year after he stepped down – as the UN’s new envoy to Libya. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres proposed that Kubis succeed Ghassan Salame, who quit the role in March last year citing stress. Salame’s deputy, Stephanie Williams, has been acting Libya envoy.
Ján Kubiš has been serving as the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon since 2019 and was the Special Representative and head of the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq from 2015 until 2018.
