Louise Regan, National Executive Member of the UK’s National Education Union, spoke to Medya News reporter Erem Kansoy about the current developments in Syria. She discussed the attacks on the Kurdish people by the Turkish state and its mercenaries and underlined that the attention on the international stage to Turkey’s role is insufficient.
She praised the efforts of the Kurdish people on the ground and their resistance in defence of the people, and called for solidarity with them and increased pressure on governments around the world to force Turkey to back down.
“We should be calling upon Turkey to stop any support for what is happening, in terms of the violations against people on the ground currently, and obviously that is impacting on the Kurdish community but other communities as well, where there have been significant attacks,” she said.
“These are being reported, but there is very little being said on the sort of global stage,” she added.
“I think it’s also important that we take it, you know, that we take this up with our own political leadership within our own countries. We should be contacting MPs, and putting pressure on them to raise this in Parliament and for our governments to be challenging Turkey about their involvement in any of these acts and any support for groups that are and committing acts of violence or discrimination. I think that is definitely what we should be doing,” she continued.
“We want Turkey to stop supporting those groups that are involved in this [war]. We send our absolute solidarity to the Kurdish people in the situation. On the ground [it] looks horrific and it must be extremely challenging. There are some horrific footage and images coming out. And as always, the Kurdish community are inspirational to us in that they do not allow injustice to continue. They protect others and they are committed to wanting a peaceful and just solution to what is happening,” she followed.
“So our solidarity is absolutely with them. We will continue to call out the things that are happening and do our best to challenge that and stand in solidarity with them in what is happening to them at the moment,” she concluded.
