The villagers have not had electricity for 25 days due to Dicle Electricity Distribution company. (DEDAŞ) dismantling the transformers in Derik’s Boyaklı District, in Mardin (Merdin), the villagers stated that the state want their land and homes to be evacuated on the grounds of “expropriation”.
The Qızıla Xerabe and Herem regions in the Derik district of Mardin (Mêrdin) will be flooded due to the building of an artificial lake for agricultural irrigation system in the region.
Due to the proposed lake, the land and homes of the villagers began to be expropriated in 2017. The villagers reacted to the fact that the state offered to pay only a paltry amount of between 20 and 30 thousand Turkish Lira for their homes and applied to the court in order for the expropriation decision to be lifted.
While the court process was ongoing, the electric company, Dicle Electricity, sent teams to the district with military forces on 25 December and cut the electricity of the citizens. Then, they dismantled the public transformers and took them away. The villagers reacted to the dismantling of the transformers stating that they had paid for the electricity transformers with their own money.
