Senior figures from Turkey’s pro-Kurdish opposition Peoples’ Equality and Democracy (DEM) Party met with newly re-elected Parliamentary Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş on Wednesday, calling for the swift creation of a cross-party commission to address the long-standing Kurdish issue before the legislature’s summer recess, Ceren Bayar of the T24 reported.
DEM Party Parliamentary Group Chair Gülistan Kılıç Koçyiğit said the meeting, which took place at the Turkish Grand National Assembly in Ankara, focused on establishing the commission and ensuring its operations continue through the summer months.
Kurtulmuş reportedly expressed openness to the proposal and announced plans to convene all parliamentary group leaders following his return from an official trip abroad on 19 June.
“There is consensus with the Speaker that the commission can be formed before Parliament closes and begin its work during the summer,” said Koçyiğit. “If other parties agree, there will be no obstacle.”
While no formal framework has yet been finalised, all party representatives are expected to participate in drafting the commission’s mandate.
The DEM Party stressed that addressing the Kurdish question through parliamentary mechanisms was a priority and that swift action could open space for democratic dialogue in a polarised political landscape.
