After Turkey appointed several trustees to Kurdish city municipalities following local elections, corruption has increased in local administrations.
As trustees transfer large amounts of money to their supporters, Iğdır city’s trustee also spent the municipality’s military budget on the construction of a surrounding wall.
Hüseyin Engin Sarıibrahim, the trustee appointed to the Iğdır municipality, allocated the library and sports complex to other associations. Now he is misspending the municipality’s military budget.
Sarıibrahim approved the construction of a surrounding wall for the Province Gendarmerie Station during a municipality assembly meeting in December.
According to the decision, which received a unanimous vote in favour, the money for the wall, which has an area of 57,823 square metres, will be taken from the municipality’s budget.
Corruption in Kızıltepe municipality
Another example of trustee corruption took place in the Kızıltepe (Qoser) district of Mardin (Merdin) city.
According to footage recorded by citizens, former Justice and Development Party (AKP) Province Youth Section chair Halil Yomak (appointed as Cleaning Services and Parks-Recreations Commissioner by Kızıltepe Municipality trustee Hüseyin Çam) was caught using the municipality’s official vehicles for construction work on his own house.
A digger and an official municipality vehicle were seen in front of Yomak’s house, according to the footage recorded on 2 January.
In addition, it was revealed that the municipality’s cleaning staff was used by Yomak to clean his house.
According to Mesopotamia Agency’s report, citizens of Kızıltepe reacted strongly against Yomak misuse of local resources.
