The Union for Democracy (DİB) organized a democracy conference in Turkey. It concluded that the forthcoming period will be difficult and democratic forces should engage in the struggle together. The final declaration of the meeting was issued on 25 January.
Former European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) judge, Rıza Türmen, presented the opening speech. Türmen said: “65% of Turkey says the country is getting worse. However, the vote rate of support for the opposition has not increased. That worsening situation will not change unless the opposition does something drastic.”
The final conference declaration drew attention to the suppression of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in the country and it also voiced concerns regarding women’s rights and the demands of the poor and workers, alongside other political ‘rights and freedoms’ concerns.
