A new round of talks on the Kurdish question seemed to be on the horizon in Turkey in mid-October 2024, but then a new wave of violence hit the region.
On 23 October, an armed attack claimed by the People’s Defence Forces (HPG), the self-defence force of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), outside the headquarters of Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ) near Ankara, killed seven people, including the two assailants. The action was in response to the Turkish state’s ongoing bombardment of northern Iraq and northeastern Syria.
The Turkish army responded with a series of strikes on northern and eastern Syria, targeting vital infrastructure, killing 22 and injuring 40.
This video, filmed in May 2024, shows the initial bombings in 2023 and early 2024. The same sites were again bombed by Turkey in October 2024.
