The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) demands official recognition of the autonomous region by the United Nations.
“On 19th July 2012, the Rojava revolution began and spread to all areas in northeastern Syria. Defending the unity of the country through the project of fellowship of peoples and building a democratic nation, this revolution progressed towards democratic change in Syria, the self-determination of peoples,” said AANES on Sunday on a written statement.
AANES noted that the most basic principle the 19th July Rojava revolution was the fellowship of peoples and democracy. “Thus, it referred to the needs of all peoples in Syria – first as the Democratic Autonomous Administration, and later as the AANES. Shortly after the Syrian crisis began, the people established their own system and fought terrorism. They have defeated ISIS and women have taken a leadership role in society,” the AANES statement said.
The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria announced that they are ready to cooperate with all Syrian parties and thereby stated, “We remain committed to the UN Decision No. 2254 to resolve the Syrian crisis. We appeal to the UN to recognise the region of northern and eastern Syria.”
Co-chair of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), Anwar Muslim not only witnessed the Rojava Revolution, but also played an active role in it.
Under the political system of the AANES as proposed by the PYD, local communities run their own affairs as PYD takes gender and cultural egalitarianism as central to their program.
“The people of Syria, including Kurds, Arabs, Assyrians, Chaldeans, Turkmens and Armenians were under the pressure of the Baath regime. All their differences were ignored and they were standardised. Arabs have also seen great destruction. The 19th of July revolution has become the revolution of peoples,” Muslim told MA.
Stating that the Rojava revolution gathered all the colours of the Middle East under the same roof, Muslim summarised their approach to the revolution as follows: “Regional powers and nation states opposed this with their centralist power understanding and nationalism. They tried to defame the revolution. Regardless of the many smear campaigns they carried out, the truth has emerged.”
“All peoples were united in a decentralised system. It was the first time people saw themselves living in such a system. All faiths and languages have been preserved. Then the Autonomous Administration was created. The ancient peoples of the Middle East established a system all together for the first time.”
Muslim called on the UN to recognise the AANES. “If there is any talk on Syria, North and East Syria should participate in these talks as a representative,” he said.
“The Syrian Democratic Forces should be participating in any congress on the struggle against ISIS. The Syrian Democratic Council, MSD, should be participating in any talks of a political nature regarding the Syria.”
