Shakar Arab, a leading commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and a key figure in the defence of the Tishreen (Tişrîn) Dam in North and East Syria (Rojava), has praised the 28th day of “historic resistance” against ongoing attacks by Turkish-backed mercenaries on the ground and direct Turkish airstrikes. Arab highlighted the resilience of the SDF fighters, commending their steadfastness in the face of relentless airstrikes, artillery shelling, and ground offensives.

“Today marks the 28th day of the historic resistance launched by our fighters on all fronts,” Arab said. “Our fighters have suppressed and encircled the mercenaries, despite the violent and brutal attacks carried out by their forces, supported by Turkish air bombardments and artillery fire on villages near south-east Manbij (Minbîc) and Qara Quzak (Qere Qozaq) bridge.”

The commander attributed the SDF’s resilience to the unwavering support of the people of North and East Syria. “This resistance stems from the popular backing shown to their fighters, the sons and daughters in the SDF. These are the forces striving to preserve Syria’s territories and enhance regional security,” he added.

The ongoing conflict in northern Syria has seen nearly a month of sustained aggression by Turkish-backed battalions and Turkish forces. Ceasefire efforts brokered by the United States have repeatedly collapsed, with Turkey either reneging on agreements or exploiting them to launch renewed attacks. This failure has significantly tarnished the reputation of the US in the region, as its promises of de-escalation have proven ineffective and unreliable.

The airstrikes and drone attacks have targeted strategic locations, including the Tishreen Dam area, with the aim of destabilising Kurdish-led governance and the territorial integrity of Rojava. Turkey’s actions, carried out under the pretext of counter-terrorism, have raised serious concerns about the US’s ability or willingness to hold its NATO ally accountable for repeated violations of ceasefire agreements.

SDF fighters have continued to repel the intense and relentless assaults, holding their positions and encircling enemy forces. Their resilience has garnered widespread praise, not only for their military achievements but also for their commitment to safeguarding civilian lives and promoting regional security.

The month-long resistance underscores the complexity of the conflict, with the SDF embodying democratic values in the region. International calls for de-escalation and solidarity with the SDF remain urgent, as the attacks persist with little sign of abatement, and as confidence in the US’s role as a mediator continues to erode.
