Eleven members of the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) were detained yesterday in operations which form part of an investigation by the Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office. The investigation began in early September.
Peoples’ Democratic Congress (HDK) Co-Spokesperson, Sedat Şenoğlu, and Etkin news agency (ETHA) editor, Serdal Işık, were also detained in house raids. The authorities state that the number of detentions may increase.
ESP members Çiçek Otlu, Volkan Uyar, Selver Orman and İlke Başak Baydar were detained in Istanbul whilst Mustafa Naci Toper was detained in Amed.
Police forces also carried out house raids targeting administrators and members of the Federation of Socialist Youth Associations (SGDF). The detainees are being held at the Istanbul Police Headquarters on Vatan Avenue.
Lawyers of the Oppressed (EHB) went to the Police Department yesterday and demanded that they could speak to their clients. However, they were prevented from doing so due to the 24-hour restriction decision.
