Turkey’s extraction of concessions from the NATO security alliance continues to dominate headlines. The country’s mooted military incursion into northern Syria will strengthen ISIS and lead to further ethnic cleansing, 250 local and European signatories to a joint petition have said. Meanwhile, a Kurdish MP in Sweden – one of the two countries at the heart of the crisis – has condemned what she termed her country’s ‘betrayal’ of the Kurdish community there.
Meanwhile, the UN has highlighted the broader crisis in Syria. More than 300,000 civilians have died in the country since the outbreak of violence in 2011, according to a new report which includes the highest-ever figure for civilian deaths in the country.
