The trial of the leading woman activist and journalist Ayşe Gökkan, the Spokesperson of the Free Women’s Movement (TJA), who was detained on January 27, will conclude today, according to the Mesopotamia Agency.
Ayşe Gökkan had her final hearing in a Diyarbakır (Amed) court on January 26 in her ongoing trial, which she has been facing a prison sentence on charges of “leading a terrorist organisation” and “being a member of a terrorist organisation”.
The court issued an arrest warrant for Gökkan and she was taken into custody from her house in Diyarbakır by the counter-terror police forces. After having spent a night in detention, Gökkan will stand on trial before a Heavy Penal Court in Diyarbakır.
Gökkan is expected to be sent to prison after the trial today due to to arrest warrant.
The lawyers of Gökkan reportedly applied to an upper court and objected to the arrest warrant. The upper court has not given any response to the application yet.
Over 200 investigations have been launched against Gökkan, who is known as a leading figure in Kurdish freedom struggle and women’s struggle in Turkey and as a journalist known for her column in Yeni Yaşam Newspaper.
