Nudem Durak is a Kurdish singer and a political prisoner in Turkey who has been behind bars for six years. She was charged for ‘terrorist propaganda’ and imprisoned for 19 years because of singing Kurdish songs during the Newroz festival.
International campaigns were launched demanding her release and various signatories – including Angela Davis, Noam Chomsky, Ken Loach, David Graeber, Peter Gabriel and Roger Waters – joined in calls for her release. Unfortunately, Turkish authorities have continued to imprison Nudem Durak.
Vesile Yüksel, who shares the ward with Durak, spoke from prison: “Her instrument was broken but she has continued to perform music for us: she sings for us – it has always been her passion”.
