The winners of the 71st annual Berlin Film Festival have been announced in an online ceremony.
Romanian filmmaker Radu Jude’s “Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn” received the Golden Bear for Best Film. “Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy”, by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, won the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize.
For the first time, both male and female actors competed in the same category. This was a decision made by the festival organisers on the grounds of gender equality and this year the festival has awarded its first-ever gender-neutral acting prize to Maren Eggert.
“Brother’s Keeper”, a film directed by the Kurdish director Ferit Karahan, who was born in 1983 in Mus in Turkey, won the FIPRESCI Panorama prize.
“Brother’s Keeper” tells the story of Kurdish children who have been educated away from their families while under Turkey’s assimilation policy. The film follows a Kurdish youth who tries to take his best friend from boarding school to a hospital.
