The Kongreya Star Coordination, a confederation of women’s movements throughout the region of North and East Syria (Rojava), published a written statement regarding International Mother Language Day, which takes place on 21 February.
In the statement the Kongreya Star said, “In North and East Syria, we organise ourselves around the idea and philosophy of a democratic nation, which includes all nations and religions, and we protect culture, language, and geography”.
The Kongreya Star also pointed out the importance of mothers in the preservation of the language. “Mothers play a significant role in the protection of Kurdish. Since the Rojava revolution, many women are now able to access education, and this has contributed to the protection of the language”.
