The General Command of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) warned on Tuesday of an impending Turkish-led invasion targeting Kobani (Kobanê), a city synonymous with its pivotal resistance against ISIS nearly a decade ago. The SDF reaffirmed its readiness to defend the city, drawing parallels between the ongoing threats and the global support Kobani received during the battle against ISIS in 2014.
In their statement, the SDF highlighted Turkey’s intensified military presence in the region, stating, “A massive presence of Turkish military and Turkish-backed mercenaries is stationed around Kobani, Qara Qozaq Bridge, and Tishreen Dam, threatening an invasion.” They accused Turkey of using similar tactics to its support for ISIS in the past, framing any new attack as an attempt to undermine the region’s stability.
The statement called for public mobilisation, urging all communities to participate in defending Kobani and strengthening self-defence efforts. “As much as our people can defend the streets and neighbourhoods in any city, they will be of help to the self-defence forces,” the SDF said, emphasising collective resistance.
Linking the current threat to the legacy of Kobani’s historic defence during the ISIS siege, the SDF warned that Ankara views the region’s resilience as a challenge to its geopolitical aims. “The whole world celebrated our victory against ISIS. Today, the Turkish state sees attacking these same areas as revenge for ISIS’s defeat,” the statement read.
The SDF also called for renewed global solidarity akin to the support Kobani received during World Kobane Day on 1 November 2014. They appealed to the international community to join efforts in defending Kobani and promoting a vision of a democratic and free Syria. “The spirit of solidarity with Kobani will defend our world from ISIS and its allies,” the statement concluded.
Separately, SDF General Commander Mazloum Abdi addressed the press, revealing ongoing negotiations with the US-led Global Coalition to Defeat Da’esh (ISIS) and Turkey to secure a permanent ceasefire in northern Syria. While diplomatic efforts continue, the SDF reiterated a commitment to defending Kobani should talks falter.

The SDF’s warnings underscore the broader tensions in northern Syria, where Turkish forces and their allies have repeatedly clashed with local defence forces. As a symbolic stronghold, Kobani represents more than its geographic position—it stands as a testament to the resistance against extremism and external aggression.
