Ahmet Karamus, Co-President of the Kurdistan National Congress (KNK), has attributed the lethal attack on the KNK’s Erbil (Hewlêr) office on Monday to the city’s security apparatus, controlled by the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).
Karamus emphasised that the attack “could not have been executed without the assistance of Southern Kurdistan authorities,” thereby implicating the KDP’s involvement. He also pointed out the presence of security cameras at the KNK office, suggesting that the KDP should be able to identify the culprits.
Meanwhile, the pro-Kurdish Green Left Party in Turkey issued a statement condemning the attack. The party stressed that such acts aim not only to harm individuals and organisations but fundamentally to undermine Kurdish national unity. They pledged to continue defending the interests of the Kurdish people against those seeking to deepen the Kurdish issue through acts of violence.
The attack, which took place on Monday afternoon, led to the death of Deniz Cevdet Bülbün, from the Yüksekova (Gever) district of Turkey’s Kurdish-majority southeastern province of Hakkari (Colemerg).
The KNK, a Brussels-based Kurdish umbrella group, is still under investigation for the incident. Journalists have faced restrictions in accessing the scene, imposed by the ruling Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).
These condemnations occur in a context of Turkish government’s escalating violence and targeted killings against Kurdish activists and organisations in Iraqi Kurdistan, raising concerns about the safety and unity of the Kurdish people.
