Iraqi Kurdistan: At least one person was killed in an armed attack on the Erbil (Hewlêr) office of the Kurdistan National Congress (KNK), the Brussels-based Kurdish umbrella group on Monday afternoon, Roj News reported.
The victim of the attack has been identified as Deniz Cevdet Bülbün, from the Yüksekova (Gever) district of Turkey’s Kurdish-majority southeastern province of Hakkari (Colemerg).
The KNK has not yet issued a statement on the incident. Speaking to Medya Haber TV, journalist Mervan Özdemir said that journalists have not been able to get to the scene of the incident due to the restrictions on the free press imposed by the ruling Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), and so do not yet have any detailed information. Özdemir also said that some citizens who were members of the Erbil Branch of the KNK were detained by KDP-affiliated law enforcement officials.
