Zagros Hiwa, a prominent spokesperson for the Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK) has responded to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party’s (PKK) announcement of its dissolution on 12 May, reiterating the group’s willingness to seek a democratic solution to the Kurdish issue.
In his statement, Hiwa emphasised the opportunity for Turkey to take crucial political and legal steps to advance the process, while also highlighting that no formal agreement has been reached between the two parties. He stressed that the responsibility for creating the conditions for such an agreement lies with Turkey.
“So far, there has been no written or verbal agreement between the PKK and the Turkish state. What has been done is a unilateral declaration of good faith by the PKK and unilateral steps taken by the PKK to pave the way for a democratic solution to the Kurdish issue,” he said.
“It is now time for other relevant parties, especially the Turkish state, to take the necessary political and legal steps towards a peaceful and democratic solution to the Kurdish issue,” Kiwa stressed, adding, “What will happen next depends entirely on the legal and political steps the state will take.”
Hiwa also highlighted that Abdullah Öcalan will oversee the implementation of the transition process and emphasised that the jailed Kurdish leader must be released to work freely in a safe and conducive environment.
