Iranian authorities have placed the parents of Jina (Mahsa) Amini under house arrest ahead of the anniversary of her death, which sparked worldwide protests under the slogan ‘Jin, Jiyan, Azadî’ (Woman, Life, Freedom).
Amini’ father, Emced Amini, had stated on 13 September that the family had the right to hold an annual memorial for their daughter in accordance with religious traditions. He announced plans to hold a ceremony on Sunday to mark the second anniversary of her death, saying, “If the Iranian regime does not intervene like last year, we will hold the ceremony.”
Following his announcement, Iranian authorities placed Emced Amini and his wife under house arrest, according to sources. Access to Aichi Cemetery in Saqqez, where Amini is buried, has been blocked, and the city has been placed under heavy security.
Reports indicate that access to and from Saqqez is being closely monitored, with helicopters flying over the city as part of the heightened security measures.
The anniversary marks two years since Jina (Mahsa) Amini was killed by Iranian regime forces on 16 September 2022, an event that triggered the ‘Jin, Jiyan, Azadî’ protests, which quickly spread worldwide as a symbol of resistance against oppression and a call for women’s rights.
