An Israeli airstrike targeted a school in Gaza City’s al-Daraj neighbourhood on Saturday morning, killing at least 100 people and injuring dozens more. Tabiin School was sheltering thousands of displaced Palestinians at the time of the attack, according to the Palestinian news agency WAFA.
The school had been providing refuge to civilians who had been forced to flee their homes due to ongoing military operations in the region. The Israeli military claimed that its air force had targeted the school because it was being used by Hamas as a command centre.
Palestinian sources, however, state that the school was filled with civilians, many of whom were women and children, seeking safety from the violence engulfing Gaza. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue operations continue in the heavily damaged building.
The attack has drawn international condemnation, with calls for an immediate ceasefire and for all parties to adhere to international humanitarian law, particularly in protecting civilians in conflict zones.
