Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) has established three commissions to investigate 71 allegations of fraud during the Kurdistan Region of Iraq’s (KRI) recent elections, Roj News reported on Tuesday. Held over two days, on 18 and 20 October, irregularities were reported from all four regions of the KRI, prompting an immediate response from IHEC.
The three commissions are tasked with examining the seriousness of the alleged violations and their potential impact on the electoral process. In the meantime, IHEC is also completing a full audit of the votes cast across the region, as concerns grow over the integrity of the results.
According to election outcomes, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) secured the most seats, winning 40 in total, followed by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) with 26. With no clear majority, the KDP is expected to form alliances to establish a governing coalition, ending its continuous 30-year dominance over the KRI.
