Tülay Hatimoğulları countered Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s “terroristan” description for Kurdish regions and exposed plans for a Turkish invasion into the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) during the Newroz celebrations in Karakoçan (Dep), Elazığ (Xarpêt) on Friday.
“The geography where the Kurdish people live is not ‘terroristan’ [land of terror]; it is Kurdistan,” said Hatimoğulları, co-chair of the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy (DEM) Party, highlighting the Kurdish region’s historical and cultural identity. She further criticised the Justice and Development Party (AKP) government’s plans for a new and broader cross-border military operation, accusing them of using such actions for electoral gains and exploiting the grief of families for political leverage.
The DEM Party co-chair called for a return to the peace process, specifically the Dolmabahçe Agreement period, to address the Kurdish issue through dialogue and democratic means, emphasising peace as the only solution to the decades-long conflict.
