The 24th Flying Broom International Women’s Film Festival will take place in Ankara between 27 May and 3 June 2021.
Uçan Süpürge (The Flying Broom International Women’s Film Festival) was launched by women in Turkey on 13 November 1996 as a non-profit organization. It acquired the status of an association in 2009. The main purpose of the festival is to reunite local and foreign female directors with audiences, to re-evaluate the cinema from feminist perspectives and to create discussion platforms for women’s experiences and problems in this sector.
Short, long, medium-length features, fiction, experimental and documentary films from Turkey will be screened at the festival. All female directors can apply to the organisers until 26 February. The theme of this year’s festival is “Exiting Limbo”. Azize Tan was announced as this year’s festival director. She has been coordinating the Istanbul Film Festival for nine years as well as Başka Cinema and the Ayvalık Film Festival.
The Flying Broom Foundation is also planning to promote numerous events and special projects during its 24th year. During the 24th Flying Broom International Women’s Film Festival, free open air shows will be hosted throughout the Turkish capital. Five different projects will be undertaken, aimed at bringing about innovative solutions for social problems: the projects are aimed at strengthening non-government organisations (NGO’s), working on gender equality issues in the digital field, preventing gender inequality through culture and art, reorganizing the immaterial labour of women and gender roles in the domestic area and empowering trainee lawyers.
