Executions in Iranian prisons surged by 71% in August, with at least 94 prisoners put to death, according to the Hengaw Organisation for Human Rights. This marks a sharp rise from July, when 55 executions were recorded.
Of the 94 known executions, the Hengaw Organisation has confirmed the identities of 77 prisoners, with 17 still under investigation. At least twenty of those executed were Kurdish, representing 21% of the total. Twelve Turkish, nine Baloch and eight Lor prisoners were also executed, alongside 14 Afghan citizens and a Kurdish man from Kirkuk in Iraqi Kurdistan.
The execution of Reza Rasayi, a Kurdish political prisoner and follower of the Yarsan religion, was carried out in secret at Kermanshah Central Prison. Rasayi was arrested during the height of the Jin, Jiyan, Azadi (Woman, Life, Freedom) movement.
The Iranian state media officially announced only six of the 94 executions. Two of the prisoners were executed in secret without their families being notified or allowed a final visit.
