Covid-19 vaccines developed by BioNTech and Pfizer have been delivered to all the European Union (EU) countries. Vaccination programmes commenced in member states and the announcement of the EU-wide vaccine initiative was made by the EU Commission’s president.
“Today, we start turning the page on a difficult year”, Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president wrote on Twitter. “The Covid-19 vaccine has been delivered to all EU countries”.
The BioNTech and Pfizer vaccine was the first one that gained approval from the European Medicines Agency (EMA), the EU’s medicine regulator. The EU Commission has reportedly neither disclosed how many doses of the vaccine have been distributed to member states so far, nor confirmed how many vaccines have been sent to which country. At the moment, due to limited production, the number of doses provided is reportedly low.
