Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi visited Turkey on 17 December and met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Duhok Province Governor Ali Teter was part of the delegation accompanying Al-Kadhimi and spoke on a TV broadcast about the visit.
“Turkey supports the Sinjar agreement signed between the Baghdad and Erbil governments”, said Teter. “Turkey asked the Iraqi government to sign the same agreement for Makhmur as well”, he said.
The Sinjar agreement was signed between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the Iraqi government on 9 October 2020. The agreement aims to disband the Sinjar autonomous administration and affiliated self-defence forces, and deploy KDP and Iraqi troops in the region. Since the agreement was confirmed it has faced rising criticism. The Yazidi community living in Sinjar has repeatedly voiced its concern over the agreement alongside the Sinjar Democratic Autonomous Assembly.
