After years of campaigning for justice, Fadıl Şenyaşar, the son of Emine Şenyaşar, has been released from prison along with all other detainees linked to the 2018 Suruç (Pîrsûs) attack. The decision was made during the eighth hearing of the Malatya 3rd Heavy Penal Court, which ruled that all defendants would be released under house arrest until the next court date in February 2025.
The Şenyaşar family has been at the centre of a highly controversial case since the 14 June 2018 attack, which claimed the lives of Emine Şenyaşar’s husband and two sons. The violence, linked to the bodyguards and relatives of former Justice and Development party (AKP) deputy İbrahim Halil Yıldız, began at the family’s shop and continued at Suruç State Hospital. Despite being a victim of the attack, Fadıl Şenyaşar was arrested.
Emine Şenyaşar and her surviving son Ferit have been campaigning for justice for years, holding protests outside the Ministry of Justice and the Turkish Parliament in Ankara to raise awareness of the case, which has been overshadowed by allegations of evidence tampering.
Today’s verdict is a significant step forward in their long struggle for accountability.
